The Latin word volūmen gave rise to the concept of volume, a word that describes the thickness or size of a given object. Likewise, the term serves to identify the physical magnitude that informs about the extension of a body in relation to the three dimensions (height, length and width). In the International System, the corresponding unit is the cubic meter (m3).
In the same way, a very used meaning of this term in our day-to-day life is the one that is used in the workplace as a synonym for quantity. Thus, for example, it is common to say: “This company in which Manuel operates is characterized by the fact that it has a significant volume of work compared to its most direct competitors”. It should also be noted that you can speak in volume when you want to focus on the intensity that a sound can have that is reproduced on some audio equipment or that is emitted in any condition, and when you want to quote the volumes of a book. linked . In the field of geometry, volume is spoken of when approaching the space occupied by a given body, while in numismatics it is the thickness of a coin or medal.
It is also interesting to note that, as a physical quantity, three classes of volume units are recognized: solid volume units (used to measure the volume of a body by means of units of length which are raised to the third power), units of liquid volume (developed to establish the volume occupied by a liquid contained in a container) and the aggregate volume units or capacity units (which allow calculating the volume occupied by the crops that are stored in silos and granaries). As for the different units of measurement established by the International System of Units, we can emphasize that in the case of solid volume we find the cubic meter, cubic kilometer, cubic hectometer or cubic dekameter. However, the English system establishes the cubic inch, cubic foot or cubic mile as measurements, among others. In turn, this system determines that the measurements that must be used to calculate the volume of the liquid are the litre, the kiloliter, the centiliter, the dekaliter or the milliliter, for example. The English, as in the previous case, and the North Americans have their own measurements and in this case they are the barrel, the quart, the pint, the fluid ounce, the tablespoon or the cup. As far as sound is concerned, volume is a man’s subjective perception of power. The intensity of a sound is determined from the amount of energy (called acoustic power) that passes through a surface per second. The higher the power, the louder the volume. A fact that must always be kept in mind is that volume and loudness are not synonymous, since the latter gives a name to how loudness is subjectively perceived.
The volume level is measured in decibels (dB), which is a logarithmic unit. By convention, it has been established that a hearing threshold of 0 dB is equivalent to a sound pressure of 20 micropascals. In this sense, it should be clear that the fact that people can be subjected to high decibels causes negative effects such as stress, lack of concentration, irritability or various depressive symptoms. And all this without forgetting, of course, the physical consequences such as headache, hearing problems, insomnia, tiredness, hypertension, increased glucose and even various digestive problems.
