VLAN is an acronym derived from an English expression: virtual LAN. This expression, in turn, refers to an acronym, as LAN stands for Local Area Network. In this way, we can say that the idea of VLAN refers to a local network (what we know as LAN) of a virtual nature.
It is a concept used in the field of computing to name the development of logical networks linked to a single physical network. This means that on the same physical network, different VLANs can be established. The usefulness of VLANs lies in the possibility of separating those logical segments that make up a LAN and that do not need to exchange information with each other over the local network. This feature contributes to more efficient administration of the physical network.
Specifically, a VLAN can be formed with two computer networks (computers) that are connected, in the physical sense, to different segments of a LAN, but which nevertheless act as if they are connected to the same port. As the VLAN configuration is done through the hardware, the virtual network presents great stability and robustness. The fact that VLANs have become a fundamental part of our society at different levels is because they bring with them a long list of advantages. Specifically, among the most significant benefits we can highlight the following:
– They are considered to contribute to the reduction of traffic transmission on the network.
– Likewise, we cannot forget that they considerably improve and increase security. This is due, among other things, to the fact that the information being worked with is “encapsulated”.
-Of course, we must not forget that they allow greater agility in what are the changes of the network and also in the administration.
-Furthermore, it is established that the use of VLAN is a way to obtain significant economic savings, since the costs are reduced both in terms of upgrades and in the use of bandwidth. Better performance, greater efficiency and even smaller broadcast domains are other benefits that stand out from these local area networks. There are several ways to establish a VLAN. Level 1 VLANs are those that develop from the use of ports. Layer 2 VLANs, however, are created through MAC address assignment or protocol class. There are also Layer 3 VLANs, which involve creating virtual subnets and top-level VLANs (one VLAN per application).
In addition to all the information we provide, it is important to make it clear that VLANs can also be classified into two large groups:
-Dynamic VLANs. Of these we can say that they have the particularity that in them what is attribution is done based on what are software packages.
-The static VLANs. These others are based on what the ports are.
