What is vestige?

Vestige comes from the Latin word vestigĭum. The term has several meanings and is used to name the pieces, traces or traces of something, whether physical or symbolic.

For example: “Inca traces can be seen in much of South America”, “There is no trace of English rule in the city”, “No trace suggests that a terrible murder took place in this house”, “There is no trace of his addiction to drugs in the past. ” A trace is also an indication that allows us to proceed with an investigation or arrive at a discovery through an inference: “The experts found traces on the ground that allowed them to reinforce their hypotheses” , “Their presence in the stadium is a trace of their possible hiring that set off a wave of rumours”.

In this sense, and with regard to the meaning mentioned above, we can see that the term we refer to is widely used in the field of Criminology. In this science, which is responsible for studying the causes and the different circumstances that involve a crime, in addition to analyzing the personality of the criminals who committed it, the aforementioned concept is used to refer to all that material that could be. linked to the criminal act. It is important to establish the nuance that at first with the aforementioned trace there is no absolute certainty that it is totally and absolutely linked to the aforementioned violation of the law, but once it is established that it is, it ceases to be a simple trace to become what it’s evidence. This can be defined as a manifest certainty that it is impossible to doubt. The concept of trace can be used as a synonym for footprint (mark that the paw of an animal or a human being leaves on the ground): “The traces in the field allow us to infer that the cows were attacked by a puma or another big cat” , “The wind erased the traces that, with its long walk, it had left on the beach”. The vestiges are, in short, what allow us to reconstruct something from the past. It can be a building or another material thing (as in the case of the ruins that allow us to know how past civilizations lived) or signs from which one can begin to understand something abstract or symbolic (a certain tone of voice that conveys anguish ). For example, in the Mexican city of Mérida, in the state of Yucatan, we find an infinity of archaeological remains that bear witness and prove the existence of the well-known Mayan culture. Specifically, in this city there are vestiges of the classical and post-classical period. Among them, we can highlight carved stones with different shapes and decoration, sculptures of different types such as El Moro Muza or villages such as Chen-Hó, located in the Parque Recreativo do Oriente, or that of Dzoyilá, which is close to what is the Kukulkán Park.
