From the Latin variĕtas, variety is the property of what is varied (unequal, different, different, unequal, heterogeneous). Variety, therefore, is the grouping of diverse elements or dissimilarities into a given unit.
For example: “In this restaurant there is an impressive variety of food”, “You can’t complain, son: it has a wide variety of games to choose from”, “Our company seeks to offer the widest variety of options in the market”, “This store sells beautiful clothes but lacks variety. ” Variety implies diversity and, therefore, expands a certain repertoire or range of possibilities. If there is no variety, all elements are the same and offer the same benefits. That’s why variety, in all areas, is positive.
In this sense, we must emphasize the existence of a popular saying that uses the term to which we refer. It is about “in the variety is the flavor”. In this way, with the said Spanish saying, what is intended to convey is that the fact that this diversity exists is what allows anyone to find in it what pleases and satisfies them, as not everyone has the same preferences or tastes. . Variety is also a show that takes place in a theater and encompasses a set of different characteristics: “Your grandmother was a great figure in vaudeville” , “My intention is to become a vaudeville artist” . It is in the 19th century that the origin of what was called vaudeville theater is located, which is characterized by including a great diversity of numbers and shows of different typologies, in order to satisfy the tastes of all spectators. Thus, not only dances or magic were included, but also dramatic representations or numbers of juggling and contortionism. Thus, among the shows that fall within this genre of variety, we can highlight cabaret, burlesque, circus, vaudeville, music-hall or revue. The latter genre, a mixture of several of these shows and musical comedy, had its heyday in the period between the 20’s and 40’s, although in the case of Spain it had a heyday in the 70’s/80’s. One of the emblematic establishments throughout history that has become the birthplace and stage of varieties is, without a doubt, the mythical Moulin Rouge de Paris. For mathematics, the manifold is an object with standardized characteristics that is part of geometry and that is responsible for generalizing the intuitive notion of surface and curve in dissimilar bodies and in any dimension. Biology uses the notion of variety to point out the groups that can be classified into different species of plants and animals. These varieties are distinguished by certain traits that are perpetuated by inheritance.
Linguistic variety, finally, is a neutral concept that refers to the differences between speakers of the same language, without going into ambiguous evaluations and terminologies apart from dialects or languages. Variety can arise for social, geographic or other reasons.
