The water vapor – steam – produced in a steam locomotive is used as a means of providing sufficient force to move the mechanical components of the engine car, thus allowing the locomotive to pull the rest of the connected cars.

Through technological advances, steam has become a much more useful, cleaner and more efficient means of producing energy, which has recently been used in a large number of industries. The increase in steam efficiency is mainly due to the introduction of the steam jet, an ejection system that allows the use of steam in various ways, from cleaning to refrigeration. Steam power offers a much more efficient means of powering large appliances such as refrigerators and large air conditioning units.

The basic principle of a steam jet ejector system is quite simple in theory. Steam is pushed into a chamber through a high pressure nozzle or opening and receives only one outlet from the chamber. This creates a vacuum inside the chamber through which the steam is being pushed.

The chamber in a steam jet can also be filled with a liquid, which is at a much lower temperature than the steam. The low temperature of the liquid creates a cooling effect as the vapor enters and leaves. This causes the cooled liquid to be incorporated into the steam and a vacuum force is created which in turn forces the steam through the outlet opening.

In refrigeration and cooling units, the outgoing steam, or “driving” steam, is ejected from the vacuum chamber at a much lower temperature and pressure directly onto the working elements of the refrigeration system. This creates a cooling effect through the evaporation process, after which the cooled air is then pushed through the cooling unit. There, it lowers the temperature and allows the refrigerator to provide its cooling function.

The steam jet ejection process is often used by large industrial manufacturing facilities because most of these types of facilities emit large amounts of residual steam into the air through their daily manufacturing processes. The residual steam is later used to operate various instruments within the industrial environment. This allows for more efficient operation of the large cooling units used for temperature and humidity control, making use of the steam energy being produced anyway.
