Polyethylene sheets are plastic films usually sold in rolls.
A polyethylene sheet is a plastic film made from one of the most commonly used plastics. Like all plastics, polyethylene is a petroleum product. It’s a very tough plastic that can be found in items ranging from shopping bags to bulletproof vests. When made thin, with a thickness of about 0.01 to 0.4 inches (about 0.3 to 10 millimeters), this material is more appropriately called polyethylene film. These films are normally translucent, although they can be opaque with the use of additives.
Polyethylene is a very strong plastic and can be found in bulletproof vests.
Thin sheets of polyethylene are sold in rolls and used in various commercial and industrial activities. The material does not rot and is resistant to many chemicals. It is not damaged by extreme weather, making it a good choice for many types of outdoor applications, and the sheets can be reused many times over.
Polyethylene is used for many types of weather protection and can be a permanent weather barrier on exterior walls. It is used in construction and remodeling projects, especially as a vapor barrier on walls. Film is commonly used to temporarily seal rooms and cover building materials. The sheets can be used as a painting cloth or on top of cured concrete to help retain moisture. Some tarps and tents are also made of polyethylene.
The leaves also have agricultural uses. They are often used as a weed barrier in landscaping projects and can be used as walls and roofs for a temporary greenhouse.
Thin sheets of high density polyethylene can be molded and used to bottle milk, soda and other beverages.
Thicker polyethylene sheets are either rigid or semi-rigid. They have a high tensile strength and smooth surface, and are quite resistant to abrasion and cracking from environmental stress. Typically, thicker sheets are white, but can be produced in a variety of colors. Thick polyethylene is sold in standard sized panels. Larger panels are sometimes molded with accordion folds for ease of transport as they are widely used in the construction industry.
High density polyethylene sheet is used for cutting boards and is a strong, chemical resistant countertop. This type of sheet is also often used for signage. Some are 5.08 cm thick.
Polyethylene items can be recycled.
Environmentalists are not very fond of products made from polyethylene. Plastic takes centuries to decompose, so it is not considered a biodegradable material. It can be recycled, but most of the time, it is discarded. However, work on finding ways to break it down continues, and in 2008 a Canadian student discovered that one type of bacteria can degrade about 40% of a given amount of polyethylene plastic bags, measured by weight, in three months.
