Po Chai pills can be used to treat bloating caused by excess gas.
Po Chai pills, also called Bao Ji wan, are tiny pills made from Chinese herbs. They are used to treat common and mild gastrointestinal problems such as heartburn, excess gas causing bloating, stomach pain, and nausea and vomiting. Many individuals have also experienced relief from symptoms caused by hangovers or overeating.
The ingredients in these pills are all herbal and there are up to 14 herbs in each formulation. Citrus bark, magnolia bark, sprouted barley, chrysanthemum, mint and barley are some of the more familiar ingredients. Hoelen, saussurea, red actractolydes, agastiche, angelica and kudzu make up the rest of the pill formula, as does Tricosanthes fruit.

The packaging of Po Chai pills is very distinctive. These pills are very small and come in plastic bottles that contain about 100 pills each, and each box contains eight bottles. One or two whole bottles is the recommended dosage, taken every two hours for a few days until symptoms are relieved. Children receive half a dose.
Traditionally, Po Chai pills treat what Traditional Chinese Medicine calls moist heat in the intestines. They were mainly used for diarrhea in hot and humid climates, but also when the cause was too much rich food and alcohol. In modern times, tablets can be used for travelers diarrhea, acute gastroenteritis, summer flu, and hangovers. Some people also use it for food poisoning, though only in mild cases.
Some people take Po Chai pills to relieve nausea associated with a hangover.
These pills were first developed in China by Li Shui Kei in 1896. His company, Li Chung Shing Tong, was originally based in China, but at the beginning of the communist revolution he fled to Hong Kong and re-established manufacturing operations. The Chinese government took over the operations of the China localization, and it was renamed Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Company Limited.

Po Chai pills can usually be purchased online or at stores that sell Chinese herbs. There are still only two official companies that manufacture the pills. Guangzhou Wanglaoji Pharmaceutical Company Limited handles distribution in China and Li Chung Shing Tong is responsible for all global distribution and sales. It is advisable to make sure that the pills have the official seal of one of these two companies to verify their authenticity. There are many counterfeit products on the market, but they are usually of inferior quality and there are reports that some of these products are contaminated.
